Discovering a little patch of heaven in Mells Somerset

Last weekend I took a road trip home to Somerset. We dodged the rain and took a ride out to Mells and Frome for a womble. My folks had stumbled across this lovely walled garden which offers yummy pizzas from their home made pizza oven and lots of tempting plants and bric-a-brac for sale in their amazing green house. They were excited about showing it to me and it was no surprise to say that I felt I had fallen upon a little patch of heaven!

Wow! The last few weeks have flown by. We have been loving this beautiful sunshine, and are getting out and about as much as possible. Here's a few snapshots of what we have been up to lately.

-Our garden is blooming!-thanks to the green-fingered goddess that is my mother-in-law. We found two of these tin baths in a charity shop, and knew they would be perfect as planters. My father-in-law drilled holes in the bottom for drainage, then we lined them with cardboard to protect the roots from over-heating. We filled them with compost and got planting. Do not ask me what any of these flowers are called-it's all the goddess' doing. She is amazing.
-World Cup fever has definitely hit our house. The biggest of the littles is enjoying his Panini sticker book immensely. Nearly as much as his dad...
-We have been enjoying our record player a lot recently. Billy was given to me as my Mother's Day gift. My boys have great taste in music!
-I organised a load of our spices, grains, etc, recently and has been a revelation! It's spurred me on to organise other areas of our house. I'm planning on a big clear out and some car booting this summer.
-Badbury Rings a few weeks ago. There were thousands and thousands of butter cups-as far as the eye could see. I took far too many photos. I couldn't help myself.

Grateful!

Maria and I longed for summer to come, for those lazy long summer days that are all our own to play with. No work, no marking, no clock....no bell! And it came, and we did all those things we longed to do! Apart from keeping our blog up to date! I really thought we would have more time to blog, but we were both far too busy enjoying the summer sun. This year my favourite past time would have to be swimming in the sea, and that I did a lot! So here is my little blog post a homage to a wonderful summer. I am looking forward to the Autumn and love the fact that the seasons are so defined in England. I have not given up hope that I might just get one more sea swim in, before the waves start crashing in and the trees drop their leaves.

...potting succulents and cacti

The boy and I have been hanging out at home a little bit more than usual these past few days due to the potty training. I have been trying to think of a variety of indoor activities we can have to keep him entertained whilst being close to the loo. So, at the weekend I bought a selection of little succulents and cacti for us to plant. We had a lovely time potting these babies this afternoon. Don't get me wrong, my fingers are no where near green, but I do have a very knowledgeable mother-in-law who talked me through how to replant correctly. Here's what you do:

1. Line the bottom of the pots with tin foil. This means that when you water them it wont leak out the bottom.
2. Put a little bit of Cacti Compost in the bottom of the pot.
3. Then take your plant out of its plastic pot carefully. You want it to come out as whole as possible so that you don't damage the roots.

4. Then put it in the pot and fill around the sides with more compost and pat it in tightly.
5. And you are done! I am going to display mine in little groups I think. Apparently these plants are really easy to look after (they only need watering once a week at most), so they've got a good chance of survival in this house.
